Right of Way

Keeping Lines Clear

Our right-of-way department helps ensure reliable power by keeping lines clear of trees and brush, and by helping clear debris after major storms.

Workers in safety gear climb a large, leafless tree, while another worker on the ground observes. Clear blue sky in the background.

Strategic Vegetation Management

Planned tree-trimming cycles and selective herbicide applications keep our lines clear, ensuring reliable, affordable power.

Certified Arborists

Our staff arborists follow best practices for tree and environmental health while maintaining grid reliability.

Storm Recovery

Right-of-way crews play a critical role in restoring power after major storms, clearing the way for line crews to make repairs to the grid.

Trees and Power Lines

If you are considering planting a tree, carefully select the species and its location. Always remember to call 811 before any digging.

Tree Planting Guidelines

Distance From Power Lines Maximum Tree Height
0-15 feet Avoid planting. If planting is unavoidable, maximum mature height of 15 feet. Do not plant within 20 feet of power poles.
15-45 feet Medium trees with a maximum mature height of 40 feet. Some trimming may still be necessary, so take care avoid planting trees where the canopy may spread within 15 feet of power lines.
45+ feet All types of trees are acceptable.
